MINISTER OF HEALTH COMMISSIONS NHIMA-PROCURED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT FOR 7 PUBLIC HOSPITALS

The Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Elijah Muchima, on Monday 4th August 2025 launched and commissioned Seven (7) CT Scan Machines and One (1) MRI Scan Machine in a historic and revolutionary move by the government. 

The diagnostic machines procured by the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) were distributed to 7 public hospitals across the country. 

The installation of these machines was aimed at reducing referrals, waiting times and enhancing healthcare across the country. 

The hospitals which received the state of the art machines included: 

ΓÇó Arthur Davison ChildrenΓÇÖs Hospital (Ndola) 

ΓÇó Ndola Teaching Hospital 

ΓÇó Kitwe Teaching Hospital 

ΓÇó Livingstone Teaching Hospital 

ΓÇó Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital 

ΓÇó Solwezi General Hospital 

ΓÇó University Teaching Hospital ΓÇô Adult (CT Scan and MRI) 

Speaking at the launch ceremony held at Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital in Ndola, Dr. Muchima acknowledged that this was the first time in Zambia’s history that such high tech equipment had been bought simultaneously using local resources and commended NHIMA’s Director General with his leadership for the milestone investment.

He reiterated the government’s desire to achieving Universal Health Coverage in Zambia.

“We believe that every Zambian regardless of background or location deserves access to quality health care without financial barriers,” Dr. Muchima said. 

He called on the beneficiary hospitals to take care of the equipment and use it to serve the citizens.

Meanwhile, NHIMA Director General Mr. Michael Njapau remarked that NHIMA considered it a duty to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Health and the Government in enhancing access to quality health care services. 

“NHIMA will strategically put investments that respond to real needs of the Zambian people,” he said.

He assured the public that NHIMA insured that the supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of the state-of-the-art equipment was bought with warranty of 3 years and that Ministry of Health staff had been trained on how to operate the machines. 

He also announced a consignment of MRI Machines that would be delivered later in the year and assured that NHIMA was not only investing in machines but was investing in quality, efficiency and the wellbeing of the citizens.
