The Ministry of Health (MOH) has commended the National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) for complimenting GovernmentΓÇÖs efforts towards the drive to better health outcomes in Zambia.
Speaking at the NHIMA Benefits Package Review Consultative Meeting on Monday 14th July 2025, in Lusaka, MOH Permanent Secretary (PS) for Technical Services Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi said he was proud of the strides that the country was making through NHIMA in the goal to achieving Universal Health Coverage. He called up on all stakeholders to play their respective parts in building a stronger and more resilient health financing mechanism in Zambia.
“This is a vital role of contributing to the government’s financing for the health sector and contributing to strengthening the health system by providing direct financing to the Accredited Healthcare facilities in a sustainable manner. It can not be over emphasised that NHIMA funds have become a big enabler for many of our facilities,” he said.
And speaking at the same event, NHIMA Director General (DG) Mr. Michael Njapau said that the Authority was making interventions to preserve the fund and among them was the review of the Benefit Package.
ΓÇ£Among the interventions NHIMA is putting in place is this, first of its kind, the benefit package review exerciseΓÇ¥, he said.
He emphasized that there was need to speak internally within the Ministry before engaging more external stakeholders to assist in developing the Benefit Package.
The stakeholder engagement meeting took place at Lusaka Legacy Resort and was attended by MOH PS Dr. Lishimpi, NHIMA DG Mr. Njapau, NHIMA Executive Committee members, representatives from the Ministry of Health across the country.
